Jamb
The top and side frames that form a door or window opening.
Joists
The horizontal framing members that support the floor and ceiling.
Joist Hanger
A metal, saddle like support used to join the joist to a ledger, beam, or rim joist so their top edges are flush.
Junction Box
An enclosure used for splicing circuits into different branches. Wires usually connect only to each other, not to a switch, receptacle, or fixture.
Kerf
The channel created by the blade of a saw as it cuts through a piece of material.
Knockouts
Pre-scored tabs that can be removed to make openings in a box. The openings accommodate cable and conduit connectors.
Lag Screw
A screw, usually 1/4 inch in diameter or larger with a hex head, that is used to secure dimensional lumber. It is tightened with an adjustable or socket wrench.
Lap Joint
The joint formed when one joist or stud overlaps another.
Lattice
A surface panel made of cris-crossed pieces of wood.
LB Fitting
Access elbow for conduit with provision for pulling wires around corners.
Leads
Short wires from fixtures and appliances used to connect to the power source.
Ledger
A horizontal joist used to provide support for the ends or edges of other members that join at a perpendicular angle.
Level
The condition that exists when a surface plane is at true horizontal; a tool used to determine true horizontal.
Linear Foot
Refers to the 'length only' dimension of a board or piece of molding.
Main Drain
The length of the drainage system between the fixture drains and the sewer drain.
Masonry Cement
A special mix of Portland cement and lime used for preparing mortar. The lime adds to the smooth workability of the mortar.
Miter Joint
The joint formed where two members that have been cut at the same angle meet, usually 45 degrees.
Molding
Wood, usually small-dimensioned and creativly shaped, used to cover exposed edges as a decoration.
Mortar
A mixture of masonry cement, masonry sand, and water. The usual proportion of cement to sand is 1 to 3.
Mortise
A shallow cutout in a board or jamb, usually used to recess hardware, such as hinges or locks.
